Photo of the Week: The Grand Canal in Venice

The Grand Canal in Venice

Recently returned from a wonderful week in Italy and Switzerland, where I spent a lot of time traveling on trains and tasted soda made out of milk (among many other things). Hopefully sometime soon I’ll have time to be a little more descriptive and post pictures, but for now keep following me on Gadling.

San Francisco's Painted Ladies and the Skyline

Two months ago I spent a blissful few days enjoying the San Francisco sunshine with two of my besties. Well, mostly blissfull, anyway… there was a flat tire on our bike trip across the Golden Gate Bridge and a flight delay coming home. But other than that, a resounding success. Check out my review of the anime-themed hotel we stayed in, Hotel Tomo, on Gadling. More pictures forthcoming as soon as I catch up on this blog!

Photo of the Week: Let’s Go Fly a Kite

By in North America, United States, Washington

Spring is almost here and I seem to have left my brain on the West Coast. Today I was reminiscing about a trip to Seattle where I took in an almost abnormally beautiful day from Gasworks Park with some friends. We ate burritos, flew kites, and watched sailboats glide by. If that isn’t a perfect escape, I don’t know what is.

Photo of the Week: Diner Days

By in North America, Pennsylvania, United States

Pictured above are three of my best friends for life: Austin, Ryan and Jesse. They happen to be in a band called Delay that is playing in Baltimore on Tuesday at the Curious Palace along with another band full of my friends, Tin Armor. This picture was taken at the Airport Diner in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. It was my first introduction to scrapple–a mushy wedge of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and flour–and it didn’t go very well.

Photo of the Week: Luray Caverns

By in North America, United States, Virginia

This week I’m putting up two pictures from a recent trip to Luray Caverns in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, a site that is just as cool and mysterious at the age of 26 as it was at the age of six when my parents took me there on vacation. I suppose if I was 96 I would probably feel the same way (if I can still get up and down the stairs, that is).

Photo of the Week: Lovers’ Padlocks in Cologne

By in Cologne, Europe, Germany

Apparently, thieves have been stealing lovers’ padlocks off Cologne’s Hohenzollern Bridge and selling them for scrap value. The tradition for the locks has it that amorous couples scrawl their initials or messages on the locks, affix them to the bridge, and then toss the key into the river below. For more images, see this Gadling gallery.

Take Me Home, Country Roads

By in North America, United States, Virginia

While winding through the country roads near Shenandoah Valley National Park, I realized John Denver really knew what he was singing about when he called the Blue Ridge Mountains “almost heaven.”

We traveled from roadside stand to roadside stand for the greater portion of the day. Quilts, moccasins, and antiques were scooped up like you wouldn’t believe. Some day when I get a real house, I’m going to rent a U-Haul and fill it up with goodies from Virginia. In the meantime, I couldn’t beat fresh honey, apple cider, and peaches.

Is this the place I belong, like John Denver sang? I’m not so sure about that. But I am sure that there are only a few places on Earth I’d rather go to sit back and relax.
